Ahlia University (AU) was established in 2001 as the first private university to be licenced by the Government of Bahrain.
It is an autonomous university which is independently chartered and which is funded and managed by the private sector.
All the professional programmes offered by AU are affiliated and accredited by highly-reputed and distinguished leading universities in the UK and US.
AU consists of four colleges, two deanships and one centre; College of Mathematical Sciences and Information Technology, College of Business and Finance, College of Arts and Fine Arts, College of Medical and Health Sciences, Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research, Deanship of Student Affairs and Centre of Media Production.
Prof Abdulla Al Hawaj, president of Ahlia University, above, has revealed exciting new plans for its future.
He said:_"One of our major plans is to move to a permanent university campus.
"This is scheduled for the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year. Pursuant to this, the government earmarked grounds on the North Island for AU. Once complete, the new campus will boast modern facilities sufficient to accommodate 7,500 students.
"Academic distinction is one of the most important strategic considerations we have.
"Our university strives completely to play the role and occupy the place, as a leading private university in the kingdom. Likewise, we strive to attain a ranking on the list of the top 500 world universities.
"We plan, in this context to move forward with the development and modification of programmes and pedagogies and to continue strengthening our relations with American and European universities.
"We now are planning to obtain partnership or agreement with international professional associations and institutions specialised in the operational spheres of accounting, finance, medicine, diplomacy and IT.
"In doing so, this step will allow students to obtain an internship to pursue specific professions.
"AU also intends to open a new engineering college and departments (for example, diplomacy, education and health management) as well as new centres of research and consulting."
