Selectors should be bold to let Dhoni lead in Tests

The return of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to the helm of affairs paid rich dividends for India again.

Dhoni made the big difference with both bat and brains as a young Indian team completed a satisfying series victory in Sri Lanka.

There is a message for the Indian selectors too. When they next meet to pick the team against Australia they should put Dhoni's name first on the list. Dhoni needs to lead in India in Tests urgently to give impetus to a now ageing, lacklustre team.

The age factor was sharply in focus on the tour. The Test side huffed and puffed on the field while the young legs in the one-dayers threw themselves everywhere.

There was also a freshness about the Indians which was utterly lacking in the Tests. First-timers Virat Kohli and Subramaniam Badrinath took the opportunity to show that they belong to the big stage.

The one-day series was mostly low scoring but the matches were often thrilling. With the wickets aiding the bowlers for once, top batting skills had to be displayed by both sides.

Dhoni did well to promote himself in the batting order. That proved a masterstroke as he had time to shape both his innings and his team's fate.

Blunting the danger of mystery man Ajantha Mendis was of prime importance. That was accomplished by Dhoni and Suresh Raina in differing styles. While Dhoni chose to stay on the backfoot, Raina used his feet cleverly to get on top of Mendis.

India were also well served by their bowlers. Zaheer Khan was on top of his game and finally Lady Luck sided with him after a hardworking but fruitless Test series.

Zaheer's opening bursts exposed a weakness in the Sri Lankan batting.
