So, what has been happening in the wacky, wonderful world of Krazy Kevin?

Well, firstly, I forgot to tell you last week about an amazing day we had out at the first BSPCA car boot sale. Since moving to our new house – which incidentally is larger than our old place – my wife Wendy has been going on about getting rid of a lot of our accumulated unused ‘stuff’ that we’d taken with us in the move.

I replied “hey, what about all those shirts that I already gave to the BSPCA Thrift Shop”. She answered somewhat disdainfully that they were just ‘the tip of the iceberg’!

Anyway, I got a shout from Jo Bradley the PR lady from the BSPCA that they were going to have a car boot sale and “would I like to be one of the first people to participate”? My missus answered on my behalf in the affirmative, and then set off on a mission to de-clutter everything from our home. Which, of course, being a man, I left completely up to her.

Off we trooped with our car full of ‘stuff’ on the Friday morning. We even took our dog Sasha along to help out and to keep our daughter company and to meet the other dogs. Wendy had done the Down Under equivalent of a car boot sale previously in Australia – but I was a virgin booter!

The doors were to open to the public at 10am, so, we got there about 9.30am. We were directed to our designated spot and then we started to unload our wares. It was not long till I began to recognise items that I didn’t want to part with (in particular, my singing and gyrating Elvis phone) and was told in no uncertain terms that “if we haven’t used this or that for years etc … etc … we were getting rid of it”! Full stop, no arguments.

Me, not being the argumentative type anyway, replied “OK boss!” But, to be fair, what Wendy had done very well was to put a price on practically everything that was on sale. This showed great foresight as when the gates opened at 10am people literally raced in. So it was pretty fortunate that we were prepared-ish for the onslaught.

I looked at some of the things that we were selling and thought “no way will that sell” but to my astonishment a whole heap of old wires/telephones/cables were pounced on.

Wendy was busily trying to add lots of items when the purchaser started to haggle, saying: “I’ll give you BD20 for the lot”.

She looked at him, laughed and said it was already up to BD44! In the end he succumbed to her charms and paid up in full (I always say never argue with an Australian), though later her softer side came out and she gave him a couple of T-shirts at a knock down price.

After the initial mad rush things quietened down quite a bit and we were nearly sold out by 11.30am. And, by this time my little daughter Hannah was starting to get ratty, it was already pretty hot and we’d had enough. So we packed up the few things we had left and went straight round to the BSPCA Thrift Shop to donate them. We were just in time before the shop closed.

The car boot sale is scheduled for the first Friday of every month and I thoroughly recommend going there to get rid of your unwanted stuff or to pick up some great bargains. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And, you’re supporting a great charity to boot.

This past week we were also lucky enough to be invited to the Oktoberfest German Festival at the Gulf Convention Centre by a dapper Scotsman – Ron Peters from GBI.

Our friends Ian and Caroline picked us up and we drove off in style. When we arrived and I got out of the car, a guy walked in front of me wearing braces and some funny looking trousers which I was informed later were called Lederhosen. With him was an attractive lady dressed not unlike Looby Lou from Andy Pandy. So is THIS what Germans like to wear … hmmmm! Makes me look like a fashion guru in comparison.

We went inside and were greeted by Big Ron who told us what the night was all about. We found our table and then moved outside to sample the amazing German food that was on offer. The names of the food were written on the side of the dishes in German so I hadn’t a clue what to choose. I just picked things that looked good and it all tasted just great.

As the night progressed we were treated to a German Oompah Band who belted out their songs. The two ex-dancers in our group, Wendy and Caroline, got onto the dance floor and twirled and boogied the night away! However, all too soon our car arrived to take us back home and we slipped out like four happy Cinderellas! Oops, I mean two Cinderellas and two handsome princes! A great night was had by all.

Auf Weidersein Pet!

Keep Happy
