Think Pink Charity Golf Day was held this year at His Majesty King Hamad's private golf course in Safriya. The immaculately manicured nine hole course was peppered with ladies wearing sponsored pink T-shirts.
The ladies-only golf tournament was held in the Texas Scramble format with 28 players teeing off in the morning and another 40 at midday bringing the total number of golfers to 68.
"Everyone working at the Royal Golf Club is very proud to be associated with Think Pink again this year," said Phil Jones, director of the Royal Golf Club. "We have supported the charity since its inception in 2005 and our previous golf course at Riffa was the venue for the inaugural Think Pink Ladies Golf Day in 2006 and again in 2007.
"It has been a fantastic turnout this year. Playing at the King's golf course has afforded the lady golfers an opportunity to tee off on a grass course in Bahrain since the one at Riffa has been closed for a while now. This year we have collected BD8,500 from the event which is more than double last year."
Lady golfers were out in full force in their pink paraphernalia from pink socks, tights, hats, shoes and even a pink wig. The spirit of charity was palpable among all and sundry.
"It's not about wearing the pink ribbon but about breast cancer awareness and to be proactive about the disease," said Jules Sprakel, founder of Think Pink in Bahrain.
"We started at 7am and it was a great day with everybody enjoying the game and the environment but the undeniable message was support for the cause,"
Sara Thompson, vice captain of the Royal Golf Club, was one of the participants who teed off at midday. This was her third year playing at the Think Pink golf event.
She said: "This is a cause which is dear to my heart as I have three women in my family who suffer from breast cancer. We all stand together to support and spread awareness about the disease which can be cured with early detection. I think it was just wonderful for the King to give us permission to hold the event at his private golf course."
Another golfer, Mary O'Malley was excited to play at such a prestigious venue and said that awareness is the key to combating breast cancer. "We have to understand the importance of awareness and cannot do enough to support the cause," she said.
Twelve lady golfers travelled from Saudi Aramco from the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia to participate in the day-long event. This was the third year running that members of the Rolling Hills Country Club in Aramco participated in the Think Pink Golf Day.
"I enjoy playing golf with ladies from Bahrain and the event gives me the opportunity to support a wonderful cause," said Beatriz Niemeyer who headed off across the causeway after the culmination of the dinner and awards ceremony at the Bapco Club.
