Catch the real story behind the A Mighty Heart in The Journalist and the Jihadi: The Murder of Daniel Pearl, pictured, on America Plus this Friday.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl stood at the vanguard of a campaign to track down the perpetrators of America's most horrific crime.

But instead of cracking the story, Pearl ended up becoming a part of it. This is the inside account of a passionate journalist and a shrewd terrorist, of a talented reporter who happened to be Jewish and the jihadi who set him up for slaughter.

This 80-minute film tracks the parallel lives of Daniel Pearl and British-born jihadi Omar Sheikh.

Both men were passionate, intelligent individuals from privileged backgrounds, and both were sympathetic to the plight of Muslims around the world.

With the rise of Islamic militancy in the 1990s, however, the two men's paths diverged; in 2002, those paths collided when Sheikh executed a cunning con game that ended in Pearl's headline-making kidnapping and murder in Pakistan - and the remorseless Sheikh's arrest under mysterious circumstances.

The journalist and the Jihadi: The Murder of Daniel Pearl is narrated by Christiane Amanpour, CNN's chief international correspondent based in London.

One of the most recognisable voices in TV journalism, Amanpour has reported on crises from the world's many hotspots, winning nine Emmys and numerous other honours over the course of her career.

The film is directed by Ahmed A Jamal and Ramesh Sharma, and produced by Jamal and Sharma as well as Anant Singh (Sarafina!, Cry, The Beloved Country and the Oscar-nominated Yesterday).
