After more than a year in the BSPCA kennels Superman, the three-legged dog, took a three-legged journey to start a new life in the USA.

The cute crossbreed touched the nation's hearts when he was found at the side of the road by DJ Krazy Kevin having been hit by a car and left for dead.

Dog-lover Kevin took the pup and called his pals at the BSPCA who came out to collect the battered canine at 5.30 in the morning.

He was immediately taken to a vet where it was quickly discovered that one of his front legs had been damaged beyond all hope of repair and needed to be amputated.

The surgery went ahead and he was soon up and about refusing to let his disabled status make any difference.

At the BSPCA centre in Saar his mischievous nature and grinning face soon made him a firm favourite with staff and visitors but his only having three legs seemed to deter would-be new families.

And there was another setback when he reached around 18 months and staff realised that, as his bones had not finished growing when the amputation was performed, he would need a second operation on his damaged leg.

But the irrepressible mutt didn't let it get him down and BSPCA manager Sandy Carter said: "As soon as he was back on his feet there was no stopping him, in fact there was not a dog in here he couldn't keep up with. In fact if anything he prefers running to walking, I suppose it's easier for him to balance.

"Anyway through all the trials he has been through he has proved himself Superman by nature as well as by name so it was a real shame to see him left in the kennels after all this time."

But now all that's changed with a call from former BSPCA chairman Melinda Salman who returned home to the States shortly after Superman arrived at the rescue centre but never forgot the little dog with the big heart.

She decided she would offer the plucky pooch a new start, alongside her other rescued dogs, and last week Superman boarded a plane bound for Amsterdam on the first leg of his journey, from there he flew to Memphis and then on to San Antonia.

A road trip to Huston brought him to his new home and now all his friends in Bahrain are waiting to hear how he has settled in.

Krazy Kevin said: "This is the best possible news. I felt so sorry for him when I found him with his leg all mangled and when the people from the BSPCA came and got him they didn't think he would make it.

"But since then he has turned into a super little dog who really lives up to the name Superman so it's absolutely great that he's going to be given the chance to have a lovely home with people who will make him part of the family."
