Achieving success in changing and troubled economic circumstances will be the focus of attention at a public presentation next month.
Expert on global competitiveness and one of the foremost business strategists in the world, Professor Michael E Porter will present Winning Competitive Strategies for Today's Changing Marketplace on January 26 at the Diplomat Radisson SAS Hotel, Manama.
He is the fifth thought leader to be brought to the kingdom by international event organiser Global Leaders.
On the eve of the recent US elections and as the country suffered the onslaught of its economic crisis, he gave a clear warning to the government that it was not acting in America's long-term interests.
In an interview, he said: "The stark truth is that the US has no long-term economic strategy - no coherent set of policies to ensure competitiveness over the long haul.
"Strategy embodies clear priorities, based on understanding the strengths we need to preserve and the weaknesses that threaten our prosperity the most. In dealing with a crisis, experience teaches us that steps to address the immediate problem must support a long-term strategy.
"Yet it is far from clear that we are taking the steps most important to America's long-term economic prosperity. Government leaders react to current events piecemeal, rather than developing a strategy that unfolds over years."
Prof Porter chairs the Global Competitiveness Report, an annual ranking of the competitiveness and growth prospects of more than 120 countries published by the World Economic Forum. His work is taught at almost every business school in the world.
He is the leading authority on competitive strategy, the competitiveness and economic development of nations, states, and regions, and the application of competitive principles to social problems such as healthcare, the environment, and corporate responsibility.
Prof Porter serves as the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, based at Harvard Business School - the highest professional recognition that can be awarded to a Harvard faculty member.
