STATE-OF-THE-ART engineering equipment has been put in place to help build one of the most intricate road junctions on the island at Isa Town, writes ANASUYA KESAVAN.
Aiming to ease the traffic flow in the area, the BD41million, three-level interchange project, which will include a flyover and underpass, will be located at the Isa Town Gate roundabout, where Shaikh Salman Highway is intercepted by Al Estiqlal Highway and Baghdad Avenue.
When complete it will be one of the longest flyovers in the kingdom.
This week senior engineers and project managers witnessed the installation of the first of the 733 precast segments that will form an integral part of the flyover. Experts say that each segment could weigh anything between 90 and 180 tonnes.
The important elements of this project, which is estimated to run for 33-months, include construction of a dual two-lane carriageway flyover, dual three-lane carriageway underpass and a bridge at road level.
There will also be a new Isa Town Gate monument, which will replicate the present one, and will be constructed 115m away from the existing location.
Currently this roundabout is considered to be one of the most congested bottlenecks in Bahrain as commuters converge on the area for work at the nearby ministries, parents flock to the many educational establishments on the school run and others head towards the Alba roundabout and Riffa.
The contract work is carried out for the Ministry of Works' Roads, Projects and Maintenance Directorate by South Korean-based contractors Sungwon International and has been designed and supervised by Hyder Consulting Middle East.
