The Bahrain International Circuit's official mascot will be called Speedy, the Desert Racer.
His name was chosen from hundreds of contest entries made by readers of GulfWeekly and our sister Arabic-language newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
Banking executive Alan Barker, 50, from Juffair, right, wins four tickets to this year's F1 spectacular which takes place at the Sakhir circuit on April 24, 25 and 26 for putting Speedy's name forward. 'That's great!' he said. 'I'm a big F1 fan and delighted my suggestion will help promote the circuit.'
South African Alan fell in love with Bahrain and decided to secure employment in the kingdom after visiting friends here and enjoying last season's Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
He joined Awal Bank as Chief Dealer Foreign Exchange eight months ago and has invited his brother, Ken, 55, from Johannesburg to accompany him to this year's big race which he predicts will see another victory for Ferrari's Massa.
