THE baggage handling operation at Bahrain International Airport will be 'brought into line' with world international standards with the introduction of the latest technology.
State-of-the-art explosive detection x-ray machines as well as the latest conventional equipment will be used as part of the upgrading project of the airport's inline baggage handling system and screening.
The investment is part of Bahrain Airport Company's (BAC) strategic plan and commitment to develop the operations of Bahrain International Airport. It will be working in partnership with Aeradio Technical Services (ATS) and Vanderlande Industries.
The agreements were signed at an official ceremony where Mohammed Thamir Al Kaabi, airport director, Dr Osama Al Ali, CEO of the BAC, and Abdullah Janaahi, director of engineering and maintenance, spoke of the importance of revolutionising the provision of baggage and security services as an essential contributory factor to the airport's overall expansion plan.
"It will result in a smooth transformation of Bahrain's international airport into a world class facility," Mr Al Kaabi added.
Vanderlande Industries, with headquarters in the Netherlands, designs, implements and services material handling systems. These systems are used in distribution and parcel sorting centres and for baggage handling systems at airports.
The company has been extremely successful over the past 10 years and has developed into one of the world leaders in its field.
Implementation of the Vanderlande and ATS programmes, the airport company says, will result in a speedier and more customer friendly check-in process, enhancing convenience and saving time in a secure environment.
It has not revealed how much is being spent on the project. The BAC was established last year under Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company with a core responsibility to strategically manage, operate, develop, activate and solidify the role of Bahrain International Airport as a prominent economic contributor to the kingdom's overall development, as well as enhance its position within the international aviation industry.
