Impact is the key to power and consistency

Golfers at the top level either in the professional or amateur game all have one thing in common - at the moment of impact with the ball there will be some fundamental similarities, which if achieved will produce both power and consistency.

Even a swing like Jim Furyk's will find its way back to the same position as a more conventional golf swing such as Ernie Els. Look at the following photo and you will notice:

The body weight has been shifted to the left foot. This is indicated by the right heel being lifted and the hips turning towards the target.

The left wrist is in a flat position, maximising power and keeping the clubface square.

Both arms are straight, creating a triangle shape.

The angle of the spine has remained similar to how it was at address with the ball. This is important in order to produce a consistently good strike.

Of course this information is not that easy to apply to your own swing because any change requires practice and correct feedback on what your impact looks like now, but the following are a few generic drills that could help almost everybody to achieve a better position.

Using just a half swing, ensure as you strike the floor that your right heel is raised, allowing your hips to turn towards the target. Keep repeating the action with a half swing to help build a better swing.

Make sure as you strike the ground that your shoulders and chest remain facing the ball and don't move up and away towards the target.

When you strike the ground, your wrists should hold firm so that the back of your left hand is flat in a straight line against your forearm.
