Speedy, the Desert Racer, is Bahrain International Circuit's heart-throb mascot. He's the island's own magnificent superhero - he is nice, clean and cool - a true racer. Dressed in a rather bulky red and white outfit he has been seen out cavorting with celebrities and the kingdom's movers and sheikhers and winning the hearts of thousands of sport-loving fans.

GulfWeekly's Asma Salman spoke exclusively to Speedy to find out more about the man beneath the race driver's helmet.

Q. How was your debut on the catwalk last month at the Think Pink, 'Where Your Heart Is' promotional event?

A. Disappointing! I was the showstopper of the event and wanted to wow the audience by walking the ramp in my Speedos.

Q. Why didn't you?

A. Martin Whitaker, the BIC's chief executive officer, shot down my idea. I think he felt threatened that I would zoom ahead of him in the popularity stakes!

Q. Do you think that it might have had anything to do with your spare tyre?

A. You mean my Bridgestone! I carry that with great pride. After all, who wants a six pack when you can have a party can?

Q. We heard that you are planning to go on a diet?

A. Well some BIC officials have suggested that I should be as streamlined as an F1 race car to add that special 'vroooom' to my already racy personality.

Q. We see you at all the top locations and events on the island, posing with hundreds of admirers, don't you get tired of all the media attention?

A. Absolutely not, I love all you media people but I'm a little camera shy at times.

Q. Why do you wear shades under your helmet, Speedy?

A. So that the paparazzi flash doesn't blind me.

Q. Are you excited about this weekend's Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix?

A. Oh yes, I can't stop zipping around the entire island! I'm fully charged and ready for some non-stop fun, gorgeous crowds, international celebrities and the amazing parties. See you there.
