Gulf Weekly Batelco announces unified data roaming rates for GCC

Batelco has become the first telecom provider to offer unified local high speed data roaming charges throughout the GCC and a number of major Arab countries across the Middle East.

Batelco Bahrain chief executive officer Gert Rieder announced this at a Press conference at Batelco's Hamala headquarters.

"From now on our mobile postpaid customers will only pay the local Bahrain rates for data access, when they are roaming in GCC states, Egypt, Jordan and Yemen," said Mr Rieder. "Currently, mobile data access while roaming costs between BD5 and BD7 per megabyte. However, the new rate is only 600 fils per megabyte."

The unified data roaming local rates are a boon for the business sector allowing customers to keep in touch with their colleagues in Bahrain in a very cost effective manner.

It will also benefit tourists from Bahrain who can send photos and video clips without having to worry about running up high bills.

"Batelco's customers may also download information, browse the net and send/receive emails at the unified rates, on their laptops or any PC, by using a Batelco O-net device," said Batelco general manager products and services Adel Daylami.

A variety of O-net devices and packages are available from Batelco's retail outlets.

The introduction of the new service follow on from the success of Batelco's World Freedom service, that enables Batelco's customers to receive calls free of charge while roaming in 21 countries, said Mr Daylami.

Batelco has agreements for all services with more than 435 operators worldwide, the largest network of any telecommunications company in Bahrain.
