Sir Clive Woodward is one of the UK's most respected figures in sport. His profile was catapulted into public knowledge after he successfully brought home the Rugby World Cup to England in 2003.
Everything he touched in his life has turned into success, in his playing, business and coaching careers; his model for 'winning' even landed him the job as director of performance for the British Olympic Association.
It is his role as mentor of a talented young golfer by the name of Melissa Reid that I write about today. Melissa now plays on the Ladies European Tour, and is surrounded by a team of experts put in place by Sir Clive to achieve greater results. She has a mind coach, a fitness coach, a physio, a skills coach and also a golf coach. By training every facet of her physical and mental performance she is well on track for success.
Making serious improvements in golf will demand attention from all areas. The ideal training package would comprise 50 per cent golf technique and skills, 40 per cent training the brain, and 10 per cent physical fitness, strength and flexibility. This type of approach does not need to be reserved for professional athletes - you can start to look at your game with a fresh attitude now.
Try to establish where your shortfalls lie. You may be in peak physical condition with a winning mentality but poor technique. You will need to get some advice and start working on your golf swing.
Conversely you may have been playing for some time and have a technically sound golf swing but you tend to throw good scores away at the end of the round when the pressure and fatigue hits. You will need to seek advice on how you can better handle pressure situations and how you can become fitter and stronger through some fitness training.
Sir Clive is in the business of change and his multi-faceted approach to sports coaching is one shared by the team at the Royal Golf Club. Our PGA Professionals have the training to address all areas and take your game to the next level by adopting a no stone unturned approach and give you a style of coaching normally reserved for professional athletes. Please don't hesitate to get in touch to discuss how you can best improve your game.
