Daniel Gillies plays Troy Harper, who has suffered the tragic death of his wife, Corrine (Bitsie Tulloch). Beset by grief, he receives a letter from his Aunt Hilda (Barbara Hershey) that Corrine left for him before her death. Troy finds himself following her last request, to drive to the desert and build Hilda a porch, and along the way, to 'uncross the stars'. He meets Hilda's friends, a group of elderly ladies who show him a different outlook on life and death. Bawdy, wise-cracking and adorable, the 'girls' inject unexpected vivacity into Troy's darkness.

Nathan Del Amico (Romain Duris), an attorney haunted by his past, has buried himself in his work and now suffers estrangement from his family. Then the mysterious Dr Kay (John Malkovich) turns up, claiming clairvoyant visions that inform him when someone is about to die - a gift as a 'messenger' that enables him to assist each person's transition out of life. Upon hearing Kay's claims, Nathan feels his death-laden memories double in intensity - and grows convinced that either he now stands on the verge of death, or he has the same messenger abilities as Kay.
