Love and peace themes set for back-to-school

Sorry kids, school may only just have finished for the summer, but already the fashion industry is deciding what you will be wearing next term.

Peace, love and neon are apparently the back-to-school buzzwords for a generation too young to remember those fashion themes the first time around, or even the second.

Autumn will see a celebration of feel-good prints, including peace signs, flower power and butterflies, against a backdrop of psychedelic colours with a 60s' revival by way of the 80s.

In fact there was a lot of 60s' influence in 80s' fashion - just bigger, brighter and more in your face.

And for today's style-conscious youngsters, who are more used to grunge and techno, these looks are fresh and exciting as well as being easy to put together and allowance-friendly.

Sales of tie-dye and peace signs are already proving strong and both motifs look set to move forward into autumn.

Then there are the Woodstock-infused bohemian touches, such as peasant tops and fringe, which lasted into the early 1970s.

In fact there's likely to be quite a lot of mixing going on with pieces from the 60s, 70s and 80s melding together for a look that's bang up-top-date.

According to celebrity stylist Art Conn, who is an advisor to American Idol: "There's a fashion freedom that was celebrated in the late 1960s that kids connect with, that casual vibe - that's easy to recreate and keep in that theme."

Starlets like Nicole Richie, Miley Cyrus, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen all embrace their inner boho, influencing girls everywhere. The style has been mainstream for a while, but it's hitting big for back to school."

So, why now? Well fashion is always cyclical, but today's economy might be having an effect too, encouraging that 'I-don't-need-everything mentality' that ruled the hippie years.

As for mum, she can capture the spirit of the 60s in a way appropriate for her age, knowing the limits of a largely youthful look, Conn says.

"For a mum, tights work for any generation, and so does a fringe boot or a handbag with fringe. That's your nod to the 60s," he says.

"You don't want to see mum in a leather headband - I don't want to see that, and their daughters will run the other way."
