Bahrain will host the world-renowned F2 World Championships for Powerboating for the first time.

The three day event will be staged on October 15-18 at Amwaj Islands under the patronage of Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and with the involvement of leading international and local companies.

The event is organised by Union International Motonautique (UIM), the international governing body of power boating, and Formula World Sports, the international promoter of F2 World Championship in the Middle East and Asia.

The 2009-2010 season of the UIM F2 World and Continental Powerboat Championships was launched recently in Dubai by Abdul Salam Fairooz and details of Bahrain's involvement was outlined at a press conference yesterday at the Dragon Hotel on Amwaj.

It was the first time in the history of the Formula 2 class that an Arab had been elected as the official promoter of the series of international races.

As well as Bahrain and the UAE, other hosting countries include Portugal, Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Fairooz said the championship series would develop 'into something very special'.

Formula 2 boats are equipped with two-litre stock engines generating 200 HP and speeds up to 200 km/h.

Due to their specially designed hulls, Formula 2 boats are able to turn almost instantaneously incurring more G forces than any other racing machine.
