St. Christopher's Concert Series returns to Bahrain's music scene with six concerts planned for the season. It will kick-start with acclaimed British clarinetist Julian Bliss.

A child prodigy and clarinet designer, Julian, 19, is a well established musician on the international concert scene having already appeared as soloist with famed orchestras including the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Royal Philharmonic and Orchestre National de France.

He has performed both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, notably with his teacher Sabine Meyer. At the age of 13, by royal invitation, he performed at Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee and also performed at the Queen's 80th birthday.

In 2007, Julian was invited by Conn Selmer to design a range of affordable clarinets bearing his name.

He will be appearing on Friday, September 25, 7.30pm at St Christopher's Junior School Hall, Saar. Tickets costing BD8 are available from school receptions and The Bookcase. Children under-12 not permitted.

The Bahrain Ballet Centre in Budaiya and the Marina Club, Manama, will stage dance classes for children and adults including classical ballet, tap, modern and Irish dancing. Students from different schools on the island will perform during the Reflux Music Festival at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir from 5pm to 11pm on September 24. Rates are BD3 per head and free for children below 12. For details contact Haitham Ahmed on 39626949.

Studio Ceramics in Budaiya is introducing a new Saturday morning club - the Groovy Gecko Club, for children between six and 11 years from September 26 - 10am to 1pm. Activities include cool crafts, play with clay, creative cooking, ceramic painting, games, prizes and more. The clubbers will be offered healthy snacks and beverages. British musician Andy Fairweather Low will perform at a dinner concert at the Upstairs Downstairs restaurant, Adliya, on October 14. Doors will open at 6.30pm and the show begins at 9pm. Tickets will cost BD30 and will be available from the first day of Eid. More details will be announced closer to the date.

Arab-American writer Alia Yunis will sign copies of her debut novel 'The Night Counter' at the Jashanmal Bookstores on October 24 from 10am until12pm at the Seef Mall store and 5pm till 7pm at the Bahrain City Centre store. The novel documents the final days of 85-year-old Fatimah Abdullah and her relations with her dysfunctional Arabic family. Raised in Chicago, Alia has worked as a journalist and filmmaker in Los Angeles and the Middle East and is currently working at the Zayed University in Abu Dhabi as a professor of communications.
