Dear Stan,
I thought your readers (and possibly Batelco management) might be interested to know the latest developments in the long-running saga of Liz's Landline - or rather the continuing lack of it.
If you recall, I had been trying since the beginning of October to get a landline transferred to my new apartment.
Between the building being too new to be registered and the queues in Batelco at Exhibition Road being so long that I spent four lunch breaks waiting to get to the desk, I finally placed the order on November 4 and was told the line would be connected in a week to 10 days. I called two weeks later, only to be told it would not be possible to install a line before December 13 due to cabling work.
The 13th came and went and I called Batelco again around December 20 and was informed the cabling had been delayed and would not now be completed until December 29.
On the 30th, after being put on hold for 15 minutes, the lady on the other end of the phone gave me a complaint number which has been registered somewhere - who knows where - someone will allegedly call me back within 24 hours to tell me what is happening.
Sadly, her computer does not seem to indicate anything about the cabling work or if I am ever going to get my phone fitted.
The good news is that in the spare time I have had, since I have not been spending my evenings chatting to far away friends and family, I have managed to locate the receipt for the BD100 deposit I paid when the original line was fitted.
So, come the New Year, if there is still no progress, I will be demanding my money back and trying somewhere else. Tin cans and string anyone?
Liz O'Reilly,
Um Al Hassam.
Dear Stan,
It should be clear to all and sundry that the only reason the US, the United Kingdom and their allies went to war in Iraq was for access to oil reserves in order to sustain a way of life back home that is threatened by the shortage of them.
Clearly access to such supplies is necessary in the short and medium term so that alternative means of living including the use of bio-fuels can be developed in the long term.
The combating of global terrorism and seeking weapons of mass destruction happened to be simply a smokescreen, in my opinion.
Whilst Iraq should never have been invaded, the war in Afghanistan should have been brief in response to the Al Qaeda attack on the US on 9/11/2001 given that the occurrence of such an attack is unlikely to take place once again following the tightening up of security.

Dear Stan,
I applaud you for the great work that you are doing in covering the Adam Jones story. Nothing ramps up pressure like the media as you well know.
