When a man loves a woman

Jessie James has cheated on his wife Sandra Bullock with an alleged neo-Nazi and Kate Winslet and Sam Mendez have split, supposedly amicably, but amid rumours that his interest in Vicky Christina Barcelona actress Rebecca Hall is much more than just platonic.

It's hard to think of two more stupid men! Well, Brad Pitt and Hugh Grant, maybe.

Like Jennifer Aniston and Elizabeth Hurley, not only are Sandra Bullock and Kate Winslet incredibly beautiful and talented women with the world at their feet, but they are also famously two of the nicest women in Hollywood, loved and respected by all and famed for being kind, down-to-earth and very supportive of their husbands.

Why then would a man want to cheat and risk losing what almost every man on the planet would give their right leg to have?

Surely if they took a moment to stand back and think about what they were risking they would think twice before taking that risk but the simple fact of the matter is that they often don't think before they act, or if they do, it's not their brain doing the thinking.

Some men see another woman that they find attractive and they instinctively want to prove to themselves that they can have her. OK. That's a pretty simplistic view and there are a lot more reasons than that but often a man will cheat because he can. If a women he finds attractive is handing herself to him on a platter then thoughts of nothing else cross his mind and any thoughts of what the consequences might be come later, after the deed is done.

Another reason men cheat is because they're not getting what they need from the women they're with.

That's not to say that the woman they are with is no good in the bedroom department (although that can also be the case), what it means is that men will often want more than what they think is appropriate to ask of the woman they love and/or the mother of their child.

With that said cheating isn't always about the physical side of things. While some 80 per cent of men who admit to cheating also admit that the physical aspect is the reason for their infidelity. The need for better understanding or appreciation also plays a large part.

Men are by nature needy creatures.

They need to be appreciated, praised and generally heralded for their prowess in everything from how funny they are to how well they can provide for their loved ones. If they are not getting this from the woman they are in a relationship with they will inevitably go out and find someone else that will pamper their egos in the way they want.

And this need to be appreciated can also manifest itself in an inability to handle being with a woman that is more successful, and therefore more highly praised than they are. Far be it for me to claim to know what's going on in the mind of someone like Jesse James but I can imagine that for a man who prides himself on his manliness, it must be very hard to accept that his wife is far more successful and rich that he is.

But at the end of the day, it's easy enough for me to sit here at my computer and pass judgment on people I've never met but well all is said and done, none of us knows what goes on behind closed doors.

These women who seem to be perfect in every way may well be very different in real life.
