Light bite is filling affair

Set in the cool environs of Seef Plaza in the busy Seef district, Oli's CafŽ (formerly known as Atrium CafŽ) is a new sandwich bar joining the ranks of the burgeoning cafŽ culture on the island.

But what is different about this establishment is that it works on the philosophy of providing healthy home-cooked fresh sandwiches to office workers at a reasonable price.

Standing behind the counter, owner of Olis CafŽ, Briton Sarah Jane Mcentee, said: "A heavy meal full of oil is counter productive for office workers who still have half a day's work left to do after lunchtime.

"A healthy lunch option made with fresh ingredients is ideal if you are sitting at your desk. I hand-pick fresh salad every morning and prepare the sandwich filling and sauces at home. Our bread is delivered to us from the only Portuguese bakery on the island."

Although Oli's CafŽ has only recently opened, it has already started doing the rounds of nearby offices with a sandwich basket and its success has been heartening for Sarah and her team.

Sarah came to the island as an air stewardess 19 years ago but later shifted gears to work in a kindergarten and became involved in the teaching profession for 11 years. But restaurant business runs in Sarah's blood too so starting a food venture was not an alien concept for her.

She explained: "My dad had a restaurant in Chelsea in the eighties and my aunt has a food and beverage company in London's West End. My mother owned a restaurant in Whitstable in Kent. She is a marvelous cook and in the nineties won a competition in the Sunday Times for Best 'Roast on the Coast'. I cook a mean Sunday roast too!

"But more than anything I wanted to encourage my nine-year-old daughter, Olivia, to think about starting her own business or even joining my venture when she is older."

Sarah, 44, has named her cafŽ after her daughter who is a pupil of Nadine School. Olivia visits the cafŽ in her spare time to chat to customers or bring them their change.

Apart from serving a modest menu of sandwiches, salads, a selection of cakes and muffins Olis Cafe also sells Pastel de Nata, the sweet specialty of the Portuguese Bakery at Amwaj and brews Yorkshire Tea for its English customers and also has the fine Italian, LavAzza coffee available.

'Zingy' chicken tikka roll/sandwich

The most popular roll at the Olis CafŽ is the chicken tikka roll/sandwich. Here's how you can make it at home.

Boneless chicken breast thinly sliced that is marinated overnight in yogurt and olive oil with tikka masala spices.

Cook in the oven for about 20 mins, once cooled chop up chicken and mix with a small amount of mayonnaise. Set aside.

Spread the home made mint sauce, some low fat butter and chicken tikka mixture on a roll or bread. Add fresh salad like cucumber, tomatoes, rocket leaves.

On the first bite one might think the combination is strange, maybe a little sweet, but after a few seconds the mint sauce and spices gently kick off together, giving a delicious 'zing' to the sandwich.
