I TOOK my children for what I hoped would be a nice walk and picnic at the beach immediately north of the Bahrain Sailing Club (where the Qaud bikes are).

I was horrified to see the amount of broken glass bottles and general trash discarded along and around the beach. Most of the trash was left by people too lazy to take it home and put it into a bin.

What should be a valued treasure for Bahrain is an extremely dangerous eyesore.

For Bahrain to attract family tourism it has to stamp out this sort of behaviour and ensure stiff penalties are handed out to those causing this mess and endangering other citizens.

If that means regular policing and providing refuse bins at the exit/entrance to the beach so be it. This could be paid back many times over by families that enjoy spending their time and money in Bahrain.

IT is with deep regret and sadness that I received news of the death of my friend David Fanshawe.

It is hard to believe that he could be taken from us so soon after his recent visit to Bahrain and performance of African Sanctus.

His love and life work is captured on many hundreds of hours of recordings, gathered from all over the world in what was an epic journey of discovery and wonder.

His unique ability and insight coupled with a classical music education and a love of the world in general made him an intensely likeable figure who had time for everyone.

It was he who recorded the chants and songs of the pearl divers for Salaams and the BBC documentary Arabian Fantasy.

He established, very quickly, a rapport with them, and they loved that he appreciated their music and song.

We will mourn his death but also celebrate an incredible life when we recount his stories and listen to his spirit through his music.

May God Bless His Soul.

Khalifa Shaheen and Family, Bahrain.

CONGRATULATIONS on Mai Al Khatib's informative front page article last week. Thanks to the editor for having the courage to go into print on the Marina West issue.
