And, now the nation's hot dogs are becoming pampered pets by getting the 'royal treatment' at a newly-opened facility in Budaiya.
A professional groomer from the US has been appointed by Pet Arabia as the business expands the range of services it offers to animal lovers.
Ezeta Hayes, 33, from Atlanta, boasts nine years of experience in the field and moved to the island a week ago to take up her new assignment.
She said: "Some owners here are quite anxious about having their pets groomed but they just need to understand the process and be comfortable in the knowledge that their pets are in safe hands.
"We had a lady who was very scared to leave her pet behind. However, when she returned to collect the dog, she was so excited and glad to see the difference!"
Pet Arabia offers three packages, from basic and regular grooming to 'royal' treatment which includes bathing, brush-ups, body-hair trimming, ear treatments, nail clipping, a cologne application, dental care and dressing up. Package rates range from BD20 to BD60.
Specialist services also include de-matting, de-shedding, flea treatments, mite medication, hygiene trim as well as an array of cuts. Treatments range from BD4 to BD35.
One of the first customers to put the pet service to the test was real estate company boss Gwen Roden from Budaiya who brought her five-year-old miniature poodle Sambo for some five-star treatment.
She said: "He needs a regular cut and it's great to find someone who knows exactly what is needed. Sambo has had some bad experiences in the past, so much so that I ended up trying to cut his fur myself.
"I've been anxiously waiting three months for the groomer to arrive on the island - it's a much-needed service that will be welcomed by many pet lovers in Bahrain."
Ezeta explained that a grooming session takes between two-and-a-half to four-and-a-half hours depending on how well-behaved the pet is. She recommends a hair cut once every six weeks and a bath at least once every three to four weeks.
Ezeta, who now lives in Budaiya, fell under the spell of treating creatures as a career option after spending hours watching a friend and neighbour, a professional pet groomer, in action during her childhood.
She said: "The animals just love all the attention and really enjoy being groomed. It is similar to how we want to take care of ourselves.
"Occasionally you might find a snappy customer but with the experience I have gained over the years I can sense their different moods."
Store owner Abdul Rahman Al Khan believes the new service will prove particularly attractive to customers combining work and family matters into their busy schedules. He said: "They can now leave their pets in the safe hands of a certified and experienced groomer who will look after the pet. The health of a pet is very important as it is directly related to hygiene at home."
