THE Specialised Eye Centre located at the Ibn Rushd Clinic in Mahouz has expanded its clinic and services to meet an increased demand for treatment.
It has a dedicated department that conducts studies and research on glaucoma, a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, leading to progressive, irreversible loss of vision. It is often, but not always, associated with increased pressure of the fluid in the eye.
Director Dr Hassan Al Arrayed, 60, an eye surgeon with 40 years experience, said: "It is essential that people have regular eye check-ups as this is a notorious condition that can steal vision gradually and unknowingly."
Untreated glaucoma leads to permanent damage of the optic nerve and results in visual field loss, which can progress to blindness.
Worldwide, it is the second leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma affects one in 200 people aged 50 and younger, and one in 10 over the age of 80.
The centre currently boasts the services of visiting internationally-renowned glaucoma specialist Dr Fathiy Al Sayyad and Dr N. Bhatt, who specialises in diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye diseases.
Other eye conditions which can be treated at the centre include short-sightedness, far-sightedness, near-vision difficulties, multi-distances and irregular corneas.
Dr Al Arrayed added: "We have expanded in terms of space as well as adding more doctors to our team. We currently have five regular doctors and four visiting specialists."
Pioneering vision correction surgery is also gaining popularity and the centre's sub-division, Bahrain Laser Vision, is now offering what he describes as 'some of the most comprehensive eye-care services in the Gulf'.
The Specialised Eye Centre's services and products include ophthalmic surgeries, optical devises, medical contact lens as well as diagnostic and therapeutic surgical services and products.
