Waiters on the island will be putting their talents to the test on an obstacle course and aiming not to spill a drop of water on the way.

In a 'first-of-its-kind' Waiters Race for Charity, nine of the kingdom's five-star hotels will compete for the title of 'best waiter team' in Bahrain.

The race will take place in Arad Bay on January 8 from noon until 4pm and, at a launch conference last week, competitors put on a fine display of their techniques.

The hotels already taking part include the Mšvenpick Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Ritz Carlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, Intercontinental Regency Hotel and the Gulf Hotel.

Each hotel will have two waiters and two waitresses racing across a course as fast as they can while balancing four glasses filled with water on a tray.

The fastest team carrying the most water will be crowned champions.

Heinz Krahenbuhl, Mšvenpick's general manager who hosted the launch, said: "We want to promote awareness to the hospitality sector in Bahrain and the quality of service that we can deliver. This is also a great chance to support a worthy charity and showcase Arad Bay. It will be a fun day for all to enjoy."

Each hotel will also provide five-star catering and their specialties from around the globe for a small fee. All proceeds will be donated to the Muhrarraq Charity Foundation which was founded in 1993 and provides funds and health care to the needy in Bahrain.

Ryan Rene P. Advincula, marketing and communications manager of the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, said: "In line with our Responsible Business (CSR) programme we are always keen to support such initiatives - not only will it be great fun, it will also benefit a very worthy cause."

Entry is free and customers and supporters are welcome to join in the fun by cheering on their favourite hotel. Alongside the challenge there will also be a range of activities to help keep visitors entertained.
