Bayer Never Leusen, this season's GulfWeekly Expat 8-a-side champions were presented with their trophies at an awards night ceremony at the Dilmun Club's Candles Restaurant ... by an opponent whose own goal helped secure the players their title success.

Compere David Lord summoned Ian 'Smalls' Ashbury to hand over the prizes and he stepped up to the front in good spirit.

As reported in GulfWeekly, with just two minutes to go in Bayers' final fixture against the Dilly boys a shot which cannoned off the woodwork careered off Smalls' shins as he attempted to clear and rifled into the net.

That one point was enough for Bayer Never Leusen to snatch the title. Had the Dilmun Club held on to victory the championship would have gone to runners-up Saar Eagles who beat Oak FC in their final fixture.

Other prizes handed out by league chairman Paul Millington and referee Nick Davis included team awards to Oak FC's Adil Glia, Saar Eagles' James McCrystals, British Club's Ian Butcher, St Christopher's Richard Dixon-Clarke, Wee Monty's Scot Lee, Arabian Celts' Mark Dorrian, Bayer Never Leusen's Pete Foley and the Dilmun Club's Wedgie Guire.

The end-of-season cup contest was won by Oak FC and the trophy was presented to captain Del Rodney. The British Club ran out Plate winners and the award was handed to captain Raj Pahuja.

St Christopher's Richard Dixon-Clarke won the highest goal scorer award for a prolific 10 goals in seven games.

The Fair Play Award went to Arabian Celts and was picked up by captain Paul Keown. And Oak FC's Adil Glia was voted Player of the Season.

A new GulfWeekly Expat 8-a-side Championship campaign is set to kick-off in late January.

The organisers are debating whether to allow up to four more sides to enter the competition, placing a limit on the number of 25-year-olds allowed in each team and the location of the games, currently staged on the British School of Bahrain's artificial pitch.

A social evening followed last Thursday for officials, players and the footballers' wives with the sounds of DJ Ollie.
