TECHNOLOGY-GIANT Microsoft has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Bahrain's Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) in an effort to make the internet a safer place for surfers and improve digital literacy throughout the kingdom.
The company will also be working hand-in-hand with the TRA to address cybercrime law and the active role that the private sector plays in promoting 'cyber peace'.
The MOU was signed by TRA chairman Dr Mohammed Al Amer and Tareq Hijazi, regional country manager for Microsoft Bahrain and Oman.
The MOU falls under Bahrain's ambitious SafeSurf initiative driven by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority in partnership with key stakeholders through the kngdom.
Under the terms of the MOU, Microsoft will work closely with the TRA to help address the recommendations of the Bahrain 'State of the Nation' Review of 2010 by offering subject matter expertise on internet safety and security.
Founded in 1975, Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software and IT services. Microsoft Gulf opened its Dubai-based headquarters in 1991 and today oversees activities in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE.
Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will be offering its support in fundamental online safety and security areas including raising the level of awareness of the key stakeholders specifically the parents, students, educators and various societies.
Dr Al Amer said: "The internet is an extremely important resource for young people today but it has its risks. Education is the key to internet safety, but an initiative like this can only be a success if the public and private sector work together to deliver an effective message. The collaboration with Microsoft and other strategic partners will ensure that the 'SafeSurf Bahrain' campaign gets the prominence it deserves."
The MOU announcement was made at a national cybercrime workshop which was hosted by Microsoft under the auspices of the TRA and took place at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa last week. The workshop hosted a delegation of experts from the Council of Europe and Microsoft legal advisors who led a panel discussion on international co-operation, e-investigation and the industry's perspective.
