This week the Royal Golf Club's PGA Teaching Professional, Tim Blackhouse gives tips on using the driver
WHEN the phrase 'drive for show, putt for dough' is used I understand what it means - putting is of course extremely important.
However, as every golfer will know, if you don't keep your tee shot in play the game becomes very difficult, especially on a championship course such as the Royal Golf Club's Montgomerie course.
The basic swing for a driver is the same as with all the other clubs in your bag, but you want a shallower angle of attack with a driver than with an iron. To create this, the set up must be different. Below are some tips on how to hit the driver more consistently:
For a right handed golfer:
Ball position just inside left heel
Right shoulder lower than left shoulder
Weight slightly more on right side
Turn, don't sway (back and through)
Swing the club shallow (low) through impact
It's important to tee the ball at a good height - don't be reluctant to tee it up high. The only reason you will 'sky' the ball is if you swing steeply into impact.
Remember to get your basics, such as alignment and grip, right before you swing the club and you'll drive the ball longer and straighter!
