AROUND 1,000 children and parents flocked to the new Alosra supermarket on Amwaj Islands for a day of fun, entertainment and prizes.

Last Saturday was the store's 'official' arrival celebration which welcomed shoppers from near and far. Marketing manager Liliane Daqqaq said: "Even though Bahrain is going through a tough time, our staff has demonstrated a high level of dedication. Our current customers and potential ones also made the effort to make it to our event and enjoyed the atmosphere."

Katy Gibson, 31, a housewife from Amwaj, came to the event staged in the parking lot with her husband Garrett, daughter Emma, two and three-month-old Gwen. She said: "The event is really nice. It has really drawn people together."

Teachers at the International School of Choueifat, Rhoan and Sue Abbott brought their two-year-old daughter Sadie to play on the bouncing castle. Mr Rhoan, 30, an English teacher, said: "We have been living here for the past 18 months. It is just opposite to where we stay and it's a good time of the year to hold such an outdoor event."

Retail manager Ali Diab and his wife Leena dropped by with their children Salim, nine, and Lyne, five. "The event was very well organised. It is an excellent set up in Amwaj as we are so far away from the main town. It is also great for the children."

The event not only attracted visitors from close by areas such as Amwaj, Muharraq, Galali and Arad but also Saar, Janabiya and Umm Al Hassam.

Visitor Windy Gambs, 38, a housewife from Umm Al Hassam, said: "I often visit Amwaj to drop in at a friend's home. It was a fun day out - despite the music being so loud!"

Activities during the day included an egg hunting competition, a live cooking show which was aired as part of a daily morning programme on BTV called 'Hala Bahrain', food stalls selling BBQ items and sushi, a raffle draw, a mini train, bouncy castle, face painting, henna tattoos, a magic show and a juggler show.

A drawing competition was also held and the winning painting will be illustrated on the children's trolleys used at all company's supermarkets. It was won by Noor Al Qalaf.

The event was hosted by MC Tony Attalla and concluded with a cake prepared by the supermarket's team and offered to customers and visitors.
