There have been several films about shark attacks, but until now there have been none that explore the affect an attack has on survivors.
Soul Surf is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton who was 13-years-old when she tragically lost her left arm after being attacked by a 14-foot Tiger Shark while surfing.
Despite the traumatic event, Hamilton was determined to return to the water and get back to the sport she loves. Less than a month after the attack, she returned to the waves on a custom-made board and has since gone on to win several awards.
In 2004 her autobiography, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, was published and met with critical acclaim.
Now, seven years later, the book has been turned into a feature length film directed by Sean McNamara, staring Anna Sophia Robb Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.
During filming, Robb wore a green sleeve over her arm, which was then digitally removed and replaced with CGI stump.
The film recently premiered in Los Angeles US is set for release in theatres in the US and Canada on April 8.
