THE WHISPERER

THERE is much discontent brewing amongst the membership of the British Club after the general manager’s position was advertised last week. Supporters of current incumbent Peter Down have started a petition, the Whisperer was told, to keep their man in post after he helped the institution, founded in 1935, to the title of ‘best British social club in the world’.

The executive committee met on Monday night to discuss the furore over cucumber sandwiches and is believed to be bitterly split over the issue. Some high-ranking officials are demanding new younger blood but others suggest their man should be kept on in a supervisory role to help any newcomer.

With 1,800 members the committee had better handle this matter delicately. “We don’t like change,” one stalwart supporter told the Whisperer. “It’s just not British!”

Watch this space for developments.
