MAZDA Motor Corp launched the remodelled Mazda2/Demio subcompact last week. It’s the first model featuring new fuel-saving engines which achieve mileage comparable to hybrids without the use of an electric motor.
Mazda said that since June 9 it had received around 6,500 orders for the car before the start of sales in Japan on Thursday.
Mazda is aiming to improve fuel economy on its cars by 30 per cent by 2015 compared with 2008 levels, and will introduce the next-generation ‘SKYACTIV’ engine and transmission technology in all its cars by 2016.
The new Demio, which starts at around BD5,360, achieves mileage of 30km per litre, as flagged by the Japanese automaker last October.
That is equal to the fuel economy of Honda’s acclaimed Fit hybrid subcompact, priced from around BD7,420.
