Giving to those in need

HUNDREDS of big-hearted mall visitors at the Bahrain City Centre have shown their support for the Make a Difference this Ramadan community campaign by dropping off donations between their shopping trips, writes Shilpa Chandran.

GulfWeekly has linked up with the mall to back its initiative which encourages customers to donate everyday items many take for granted such as clothing, books, eye glasses and mobile phones.

A special collection box has been placed in the mall so that donors can drop off their donations.
 
Ahlia University student Raghda Hassan made a quick stop to drop off her bag of clothes, books and sunglasses before indulging in some shopping.

Raghda, 22, from Jidhafs, said: “During a previous visit to the mall my friends and I noticed this box and, at the time, I thought it was a collection for the needy in Somalia. But this is a great initiative by the Bahrain City Centre to welcome donations for Bahrain-based charities as well. I have dropped some bags off already and will definitely come back with more soon.

“I hope the mall continues with this initiative even after Ramadan is over. This is the first time I have donated something for charity on the island. My family moved to Bahrain from Egypt in 2007. We used to donate things to the local mosques and churches back home and I am really glad we can support a good cause here as well.”

Ali Mohammed Algar, 14, and his mother Umm Abdul Aziz, each donated a bag of clothes as well. The 45-year-old housewife, from Arad, said: “Ramadan is a time to do good deeds and lend a hand to charity. The Prophet has been a great example of kindness and helping those in need. I also try and encourage my son to do the same.”

Goods donated will be sorted for distribution by members of the Awali Thrift Shop, the renowned charity champions who have been supporting those in need throughout the kingdom for 43 years.

The collection box is located on the ground floor behind the customer services desk at the mall.
