Mike Myers is in negotiations with New Line Cinema to make a fourth instalment of the comedy franchise Austin Powers, an insider has confirmed.
A report on HitFix saying that Myers had closed the deal was incorrect. According to insiders, New Line has long wanted to make the movie but coming to terms with Myers has been ‘complicated’.
Negotiations to make the sequel have been ongoing for more than a year, another source said.
The 1997 film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery commanded $67.7 million at the box office. The 1999 sequel Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me proved the popularity of the franchise and grossed $312 million worldwide.
The third instalment, Austin Powers: Goldmember, which featured Beyonce as the film’s leading lady, grossed $296.7 million worldwide in 2002.
With nine years since the last outing, Myers and the studio are currently working out the kinks for the fourth instalment.
Myers is something of a franchise machine – he starred in the 1992 and 1993 Wayne’s World movies and, most recently, he provided the voice of the titular character in all four Shrek movies.
