THE axe has finally fallen on popular British Club general manager Peter Down. He found out officially that his contract was not being renewed in a text message received whilst attending a family wedding back in the UK, the Whisperer hears.

The committee ignored a passionate plea in the form of a petition signed by scores of members and the position remains open.

Mr Down helped the institution, founded in 1935, to the title of ‘best British social club in the world’ and has returned to Bahrain to collect his belongings from the office.

It is understood high-ranking officials have been demanding new younger blood and outmanoeuvred opposing committee members who suggested their man should be kept on in at least a supervisory position for a further 12 months.
