Having successfully survived looking the wrong way at junctions, punching the window every time I went to change gear, getting over the shock of paying £1.50 per litre of fuel instead of the equivalent 12 pence per litre it is here in Bahrain and remembering to actually get out of the car to put the said fuel into the fuel tank I returned with trepidation wondering what, if anything, will have changed in this wonderful little island haven we live in.

In my UK hire car I wanted to see what music was being played and tuned into Radio 1 – only to hear Radio 1 constantly promoting what you can hear in the coming weeks on Radio 1. What happened to playing good music and having interaction with listeners?

I found myself re-tuning to Radio 2 to catch Chris Evans chatting away, and how surprised was I when I heard Ken Bruce still doing his mid-morning show? After all these years away from the UK, I found some things never change apart from the fact he was playing up-to-date songs and even played Robert Miles’s Children at one point! I could imagine all his regular listeners dunking their biscuits with added aggression at the very thought of a classic dance track being played – this made me smile all the way up the M6.

But talking of classic tracks, one of the all-time great performers of our generation would be celebrating his 65th birthday this week – Mr Freddie Mercury who sadly passed away in 1991. I think we could fill the entire newspaper with items about Freddie Mercury, so instead I will squeeze in a small list of some classic songs (without stating the obvious ones!):

You’re My Best Friend
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy
Under Pressure
Living On My Own
Killer Queen
One Vision
Radio Ga Ga

So dig out your Queen Greatest Hits I and II and start tapping your feet as we remember a legend.

Until next time let me leave you with this thought ... No relationship is all sunshine, but two people can share one umbrella if they huddle real close.
