It gives me a great pleasure to extend to you all my best regards and sincere thanks and appreciation for your continued support for all activities and events organised by the Bahrain Cancer Society.
The society is organising its annual marathon – WALK FOR HOPE – on Friday in order to raise funds and encourage public participation and increase awareness that early detection of cancer saves lives.
The starting point will be at the north parking lot of the Dohat Arad Walkway at 5.30pm and ends effectively in the same place. Registration for participants at BD2 for adults and BD1 for children aged up to 10 will be open until tomorrow at 9am and noon at Bahrain Cancer Society in Adliya.
I will be running a football fun session for girls aged seven to 11 on Saturday at the Batelco Sports Ground in Hamala.
I am really keen to get more girls playing football on the island, so am hoping you can help me to promote the event and pass on the information to any of your readers who might be interested in taking part.
The girls’ football fun day will take place between 3-5pm and costs BD2. The event will consist of football skills, games and a tournament.
I thought Anasuya Kesavan’s front page on glanders in last week’s GulfWeekly was a very good, straight forward article.
As a scientist who has written more than 10 scientific papers on glanders over the last six years and has given several lectures on this re-emerging disease, I am still puzzled about how it all happened.
One horse from Kuwait we knew about, but how did it spread to so many stables in the kingdom and how could it spread to the Dilmun Stables? The answers to these questions are extremely important for all of us to find out – we call it epidemiology (Editor’s note: The branch of medicine that deals with the study of the causes, distribution and control of disease in populations).
Maybe your readers can help? If we could find out the way it spreads we could focus on avoiding an outbreak next time.

Charlie Holding’s Real Steel film review caught my attention. It was Marvin (played by James Rebhorn) who gave the money and not Max’s aunt, Debra. Marvin agreed to the deal that Charlie came up with immediately after figuring out that Marvin was rich.
Also, Evangeline Lilly starred in the award-winning Hurt Locker so Real Steel is definitely not her big-screen debut.
I suggest Charlie watches the film again and writes a better critique. Zero popcorn for Mr Charlie this time.
