AN Iranian actress who was sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in prison has been released.
Marzieh Vafamehr who appeared in the movie My Tehran For Sale was arrested for her part in the film which features scenes of her with a shaved head without a hijab.
The film, directed by Granaz Moussavi, features Vafamehr as an actress who flees to Australia as an illegal immigrant after being persecuted in Iran.
Amnesty International Middle East and North Africa deputy director Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui said: “In recent months an increasing number of filmmakers and actors have been targeted for persecution in Iran.
“While the release of Marzieh Vafamehr is a welcome development, it is deeply worrying that other filmmakers are still being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison.”
Amnesty said Vafamehr was released last week, although there has been no report of this in Iranian media.
