Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) chief executive Faisal Al Mahroos was honoured as ‘Man of the Year’ by the Oil & Gas Year, Bahrain 2011.

He was presented the award by Energy Minister Dr Abdulhussain Mirza during a ceremony at the Gulf Hotel’s Gulf Convention Centre in the presence of Bapco management and senior officials from the oil and gas industry.

During the presentation ceremony, the minister described Mr Al Mahroos as a ‘walking encyclopaedia’ of the industry.

Mr Al Mahroos has presided over Bapco’s transition from head operator of Bahrain’s oil industry to a supervisor of upstream activities since taking over as CEO in 2009.

Even as the kingdom was gripped by political unrest, Bahrain still made major advances and achieved key milestones in the year gone by.

Declan Bryne, country director of The Oil & Gas Year, Bahrain 2011, said: “Despite the recent political unrest in the kingdom, Mr Al Mahroos has calmly guided Bapco through a critical growth period in the face of nationwide adversity.”

Mr Al Mahroos joined Bapco as a petroleum engineer in 1976 after completing his studies in Egypt and the US and after a one-year training programme at the Gulf of Suez Oil Company. He was later promoted to head of reservoir engineering, chief petroleum engineer and manager of petroleum engineering. In 2006, he was appointed deputy chief executive for exploration and production.
