AN impressive final round of 46 points handed Badea Esbai and Craig Mills the trophy in the Royal Golf Club’s ninth annual National Day Tournament.
The duo’s score of 42 points from round one was added to their second round score of 46 to make a winning score of 88.
Fahad Al Yacoob and Steve Middleton finished runners-up with a team total of 87 while Brendy Santiago and Khalid Salem finished on 85 to make up the top three.
The 36-hole tournament was held over two days on the Royal Golf Club’s Montgomerie championship course where each expatriate player was paired with a Bahraini in a pairs better ball Stableford format.
A consolation scramble competition was held for those who didn’t make the top 30 and this was won by the team of Karin and Reinhold Lutz, Sami Al Khayer and Stan Kwik with a net score of 64.8.
A Junior National Day competition also took place on the club’s Wee Monty par 3 course. Harry Bulman and Nasser Al Habal took the title with a three-point advantage from Sammy Mendis and Abdulla Qutami with 22 and 19 points respectively.
Although they were six points off the lead after the end of the first round, Mills said: “We just dovetailed very well all the way round; if I had a bad hole Badea would make birdie and vice versa. I have had a brilliant two days out on the course and I’m thrilled at being crowned National Day Champions.”
