I seem to remember when I was a teenager, I wouldn’t think twice about biking the four or five miles to and from school each day, in all weather and even have enough energy on top of that to partake in sports during the day and probably go chasing a football around a very muddy field in the evenings.

I think we all get to a stage in life where we convince ourselves we have to get much fitter, and I have recently taken up playing tennis (very badly) and trundling around the local area on a very basic mountain bike. It’s much harder than it looks – plus having purchased said bike from one of the large supermarkets, of course, the gears and other items aren’t set up properly.

During my maiden voyage I was stuck in top gear and with extreme head winds (why is it when you’re cycling it doesn’t matter which way you travel you always have a head wind?) didn’t encourage me very much and I returned to base having covered about half a mile and feeling like I’d been in a UFC fight.

But I can happily report tennis and cycling are improving. The majority of my tennis shots now stay within the confines of the court, and some even reach my friendly opponent with regular accuracy. And, to add a little zest to my cycling, I am using the free Endomondo application on my Blackberry which keeps track of all my sporting exploits via GPS, and automatically uploads them onto a private website so I can look back over time at my progress. It also has a little voice repeatedly telling me how slow I am, and I’m just waiting for the day when she starts laughing at me.

Here are some GPS tracking songs to remember how much fun it is recalling journeys we have taken.

The Rolling Stones – Route 66
Dionne Warwick – Do You Know The Way To San Jose?
Tony Christie – Is This The Way To Amarillo
Talking Heads – Road To Nowhere

Maybe we’ll bump into each other as I’m cycling with my head down (not looking where I’m going). I hope you all have a great week and I’ll leave you with this thought … why do people who know the least, know it the loudest?
