Gulf Weekly Stroke play challenge

The 49th Bahrain Open Championship will take place at Awali Golf Club on March 9-10. The 36-hole stroke play competition includes professional golfers and amateur golfers with a handicap of 12 or less.

The championship attracts the best golfers in the region including Asian and European Tour professionals, Bahrain national team players and a number of players who compete in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Tour in the United Arab Emirates.

The professional golfers will be competing for the title and cash prizes whereas the amateur players will be playing for alternative prizes including the chance to win a car sponsored by Ahmed Zayani & Sons. The car will go to the first amateur golfer who registers a hole-in-one on the tough par three sixth hole.

Last year’s championship saw tournament professional Andrew Marshall blow away the field and win the competition for the third time, with a fantastic total of 134. The event also saw strong performances from Abdulhadi Al Noaimi, Daniel Owen, Ali Musbah, Ahmed Al Noaimi

This year’s event will see Marshall return to compete for the title where he will face stiff competition from past champions and Bahrain national team players Nasser Yacoob, Abdulla Sultan and Hamad Mubarak Al Afnan.

Other contenders for the title will be Royal Golf Club PGA Professionals Tim Backhouse, Mark Underwood and John Howells. In addition, young Sam Hobday, who recently won the Emirates Open plate competition in Dubai, will be looking to put in a solid performance.

Awali Golf Club has invited spectators to go to the club over the weekend to enjoy wat will, no doubt, be a fantastic sporting event.

Bapco is the main sponsor of the 49th Bahrain Open, while Arabian Exhibition Management are the platinum sponsor. The gold sponsors of the event include Amex, Batelco, Chevron and GPIC, while Saudi Pan Gulf, BMMI, African and Eastern, Banagas, DHL and Mohammed Jalal & Sons are the silver sponsors. AXA Insurance and Ahmed Zayani & Sons have sponsored the hole-in-one prizes.
