European tour professional Andrew Marshall clinched his third title in Bahrain in the space of five months by winning last weekend’s 49th Bahrain Open Golf Championship at Awali Golf Club.

Marshall, who won the 48th Bahrain Open Golf Championship in October and the King Hamad Trophy in November managed his game superbly in gale force conditions to post a two-round total of 145 (72, 73) and win by eight shots over runner-up Khalid Salem (153).

Bahrain national team player Nasser Yacoob Saleh clinched the final podium position with a commendable score of 156. They were followed by Ebrahim Al Hashel (158), Ali Saleh (158), Phil Jones (159), Mohammed Diab Al Noaimi (161), Ed Daly (162) and Royal Golf Club professional Mark Underwood (162).

Leading by three strokes heading into the final round, Marshall demonstrated his calm and experience to negotiate his opening nine holes in a level par total of 35. On the back nine, despite double bogeys on the 13th and 15th holes, Marshall held his nerve to birdie the 18th for a round of 73 which was enough to secure victory.

Due to the conditions, the course was unlikely to yield many birdies and although Salem was able to match Marshall for long periods, he was unable to cut into his lead.

The closing ceremony took place on the 10th tee box where prizes were presented by Bapco chief executive Gordon Smith and Awali Golf Club Captain David Bailey.

Bapco was the main sponsor, Arabian Exhibition Management the platinum sponsor, the gold sponsors included AMEX, Batelco, Chevron and GPIC, while the silver sponsors were Saudi Pan Gulf, BMMI, African and Eastern, Banagas, DHL and Mohammed Jalal & Sons. AXA Insurance and Ahmed Zayani & Sons sponsored hole-in-one prizes.
