The Royal Golf Club marked the first anniversary of the death of golfing legend Seve Ballesteros with a memorial trophy competition last weekend on the Montogomerie championship course. The individual stableford event was won by Todd Graham with a score of 41 points. Valerie Ngo was second with 40 points while Claire Cassidy took third place with 39 points.

Spaniard Ballesteros, pictured right, one of Europe’s most famous golfers, retired from competitive golf in 2007, and in 2008 was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. He died of brain cancer on May 7 last year, aged 54.

“It’s only fitting that we run a competition in tribute to one of the world’s greatest golfers,” said Cormac Flannery, the club’s golf operations and events assistant manager. “Some of the shots Seve played were truly magnificent and his signature pose at the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1984 is an image that every golfer has etched into their mind.”

Results: 1 Todd Graham (41 points);2 Valerie Ngo (40); 3Claire Cassidy (39 c/b). Longest putts: David Rimmer (hole 6) & Martyn Wright (hole 13).
