Out with the old and in with the new, so the saying goes, and I’m always excited to meet the new kid on the block.
The Chrysler 200 replaces the outgoing 2010 Chrysler Sebring but at the Behbehani showroom in Sitra it more clearly resembles the larger stately 300 than its predecessor.
Dubbed ‘the baby 300’ by many motoring critics, the Chrysler 200 heralds a new era for the company catering for a more environmentally-aware and cost-conscious consumer.
It is available with an entry-level 2.4-litre engine and a 3.6-litre option, which gives you more power under the bonnet.
The 200 has some sleek angles and the aggressive-looking front grille gives it real character.
The inside is even more impressive. First off, the fully- loaded model I drove had leather seats, sun roof and a fantastic U-connect media centre that was incredibly easy to use. It boasts Bluetooth streaming audio, iPod control with voice command, DVD player, audio jack and a sound card slot.
There are plenty of soft-touch surfaces, the analogue clock is a nice addition that gives the marque a premium look and the leather-wrapped tilt-telescoping steering wheel feels very comfortable in your hands.
One of the more interesting features is the auto start function. There is a button on the key that enables you to start the car before you get inside, when you’re within range.
I think this is a brilliant idea because the AC cools the car and saves you from the initial blast of warm air that feels like a hairdryer is being pointed in your face.
Over the past few years, drivers (particularly outside the Middle East) have become more concerned with fuel efficiency than power and many manufacturers are downsizing on power for better mileage.
However, that doesn’t mean you have to choose between the two, a point cleverly demonstrated by the Chrysler 200.
While driving through the city, the ride was comfortable, solid and quiet. In fact, the cabin is so eerily quiet that when you pull up at a traffic light you can easily forget the engine is turned on.
The most pleasant surprise, however, is that this mid-sized sedan also packs a punch under the bonnet. I was blown away by the strength of the Pentastar engine, which makes you feel like you’re driving a much bigger car.
This 3.6-litre V6 produces a class-leading 283bhp and drives the front wheels through a 6-speed gearbox and ensures that you have a steady supply of power.
In a straight line the 200 doesn’t disappoint and makes the dash from 0-100kmph in around seven seconds, made all the more impressive by its commendable fuel efficiency.
In terms of safety, it also has a wide range of credentials including electronic stability control, a plethora of airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and ABS brakes.
For a car that some motoring critics don’t see as ‘all new’, when compared to its big brother the 300, it does a pretty good impersonation.
For a limited time while stocks last, the 200 is available from only BD99/month. Subject to finance approval, BD1,000 down payment with seven years instalments.
