Thanks for the great article highlighting the attractions of the Wheelathon in last week’s GulfWeekly.
I would also like to highlight that we are honoured to have been chosen as the venue for the official launch of a range of new specialist bikes for the disabled.
Essam Kamal, president of Bahrain Disability Challenging Youth Society (BDCYS) and director of the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation, has purchased 19 bikes thanks to a grant obtained by the Ministry of Social Development and the goodwill of DHL who shipped the bikes from the US.
After the Wheelathon these bikes will be available for use by families with a disabled member at any of Bahrain’s increasing number of national parks with the aim of improving their level of activity and integration into society.
These bikes range from hand-pedal, three-wheel bikes for the severely disabled through to tandems for the blind.
I am therefore looking forward to seeing these lined up on the main straight of the F1 track this Friday at 2.30pm as the ‘lights turn green’ and the Wheelathon is official opened.
In keeping with the joint aims of the Wheelathon and BDCYS to promote integration, some of these bikes will be available for general usage later in the afternoon to help promote understanding of the difficulties experienced.
I would also like to highlight the wonderful prizes on offer for individuals raising the highest levels of sponsorship for good causes. The star prizes, courtesy of GPIC, include cameras, Armani watches and scarves. While there is no minimum level to participate, we really hope to encourage those coming to raise as much as they can in advance!
