The future of a planned biopic about Queen singer Freddie Mercury remains uncertain after its leading man pulled out of the project.
The team behind the film have claimed that the project is ‘still very much alive’, but its writer, Peter Morgan, doubt its future without Sacha Baron Cohen, who was to play the late, great Queen frontman.
Baron Cohen reportedly dropped out of the film over creative differences with Queen’s band members. The actor, known for his spoof roles, had, according to Deadline, wanted a more ‘gritty tell-all’ account of Mercury’s life.
By contrast, the remaining members of Queen wanted to make a ‘more PG movie’ about the star.
Morgan recently claimed to the BBC that the project was unlikely to happen after Cohen’s departure.
Graham King, Tim Headington, Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are set to produce the film.
