THE first 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards were handed out this week at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

The Creative Arts are a class of the Emmy Awards presented in recognition of technical and other similar achievements in American television programming. They are commonly awarded to behind-the-scenes personnel such as art directors, costume designers, cinematographers, casting directors and sound editors.

The Creative Arts category also includes awards for outstanding animated programmes and guest acting.

HBO led with 20 Emmys, followed by CBS with 15 and NBC with 11. HBO’s Behind the Candelabra was the most awarded programme with eight Emmys.

The movie will compete for seven more nominations on Sunday’s 65th Primetime Emmy Awards which will be hosted for the second time by How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris. Harris is a three-time Emmy Awards winner for his guest-starring role on Glee and as host of the 2009 and 2011 Tony Awards.

CBS’ Undercover Boss won best reality show, South Park was named best animated show, while Project Runway’s Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn took best reality hosts.

The Guest Actor/Actress categories were the highlight of the ceremony with emotional wins for comedy great Bob Newhart, who snagged his first Emmy for The Big Bang Theory, Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal), Melissa Leo (Louie) and Carrie Preston (The Good Wife).

A new 45-second rule imposed on winners’ walk to the stage and acceptance speeches created quite a stir at the ceremony, which still ran for almost four hours, clocking in at three hours 49 minutes. A two-hour, edited version will air Saturday on Fox.

During Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, singer Elton John will perform for the first time at the event.

The multi-Grammy Award winner’s performance will pay tribute to the late, world-renowned performer, Liberace, whose HBO biopic, Behind the Candelabra, was nominated for 15 Emmy Awards this year.

This performance will accompany the previously announced appearances as presenters by Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, who were both nominated in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie category for their roles in the film.

Other presenters include first-time Emmy nominee Kerry Washington and four-time Emmy nominee Diahann Carroll, Emmy nominees and leading funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Fox stars Zooey Deschanel and Emily Deschanel, and new CBS co-stars Allison Janney and Anna Faris.
