Hundreds of fans enjoyed a night out at the Bahrain International Circuit as Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam enthralled the crowd with his hit Hindi-language numbers.
He performed non-stop for a little over two hours as the cars raced on the track. It was a power-packed performance that defied his 40 years, always on his toes trying to get the audience to dance along.
He was worried the crowd would not be able to hear him over the sounds of screeching tyres trackside. But, ever the professional, he carried on regardless with the show, which was set in motion by his sister Teesha, a popular singer of south Indian Telugu-language songs.
As Nigam was heralded on to the stage by a dance troupe of three men and three women, the audience all stood up to welcome the iconic Indian musician, who has sung in many Indian languages, released pop albums and appeared in Bollywood movies.
He interacted very well with the crowd and at various stages cracked jokes about the noisy race in the background, saying: “I’ll suggest to them that they put silencers on the cars.”
And by the end of the race, he quipped: “I’m so used to hearing the cars in the background, I don’t know whether I can perform properly without them now!”
Nigam, whose first overseas visit after finding fame was to Bahrain, was the headline act of a number of entertainment shows taking place during the World Endurance Championship Six Hours of Bahrain event on Saturday. Next time, it might make more sense to put him on afterwards.
