Against the odds

Red and white was the flavour of the day at Awali Golf Club, with the Christmas Hamper Competition which saw players battling around the course against a blustery wind.

The conditions clearly hampered the overall quality of play and as a result some of the prize-winners were surprised on hearing their names on the list. The least hampered was Ebrahim Al Hashel, who emerged the medal winner with a gross 73.

The competition was sponsored by BMMI/Alosra and prizes were presented to the winners by BMMI’s brand banager Kathryn Horsley. Michael Goodger, key account manager with BMMI was also present.

Following the prize presentation, the crowd in the clubhouse confirmed again why they do not enter the Welsh National Voice Choir championships – with a rousing version of a traditional song, reworded for local use: ‘The 12 days of Awali’.

Whilst singers sang the committee and main prize-winners acted the sentiments of the song, charades style. Needless to say, the National Theatre is not likely to see a deluge of hopefuls from Awali, and only Christian Trzebinski was mentioned in dispatches for his method-actor rendition of ‘and a golf course with lots of thorn trees’.

Brian Davis rounded off the evening as the DJ, enabling those with the desire to strut their stuff whilst the rest looked on with shock and awe, probably just thankful that karaoke was not demanded as well.
